Camilla started making biltong mainly for her husband Richard, who is quite obsessed with it. She says his South African roots really show up when the scent of roasting coriander is in the air. Over the last few years, Camilla and Richard adjusted their biltong recipes to make what is now the perfect flavour balance.
She goes on:
“During the first Corona lockdown last year we decided to see if it was good enough to sell, and were delighted by the response we had from local shops in Nanyuki. We scaled up production and developed eco-friendly packaging (which was also received well), and now we’re making enough to start selling in Nairobi.”
For the Love of Biltong only uses sustainably raised, grass-fed beef produced in Laikipia – all of it comes from The Well Hung Butcher. The other ingredients, which we source in Nairobi, are also of high quality with no artificial flavourings or preservatives. She feels strongly about not using any plastic and all waste is either disposed of responsibly or reused (old glass bottles from the vinegar, for instance, are used as water bottles). We hope to soon be able to employ someone to assist with production, and that will most likely be a woman because as a woman-owned business, Camilly is keen to train and employ women whenever possible.
Their goal is to produce delicious food that has an eco-conscience and looks amazing.
