Our Promises
As we start our 6th year since we started our journey as Greenspoon, we’re super excited to bring you our 10 promises – these are promises we make to our whole ecosystem of connections. That’s our customers, our suppliers, our employees, our communities, our audiences and of course Mother Earth. We’ve thought really, really hard about these 10 promises, and we’re very proud of where it’s brought us.
Delicious
We hand-pick every product that is on the website, and we look for items that are going to delight your taste buds! Having a delicious life really matters to us – and it doesn’t mean you have to buy the most expensive ingredients; it means knowing where the food comes from, and then learning to create something delicious with it – whether it’s as simple as a nice piece of cheese with a slice of apple, or a complex dish that takes hours to make!
Fresh
We are super fresh!! Our bread, fruit, veggies and juices are all delivered just in time – which means they are baked or made the same day they are delivered to you! Once you taste the difference with this, you’ll never turn back! Because we only buy what we need, we have way lower food waste, which allows us to give you better prices and to do free deliveries!
Choice
We want to give you as much choice as possible when you shop with us. That doesn’t mean that we will have 100s of brands of the same product listed; it means we select and curate the best few brands in the space, and list them. But we look to close the gaps in our assortment whenever possible, and to ensure you can comfortably do a weekly shop with us!
Healthy
We seek out the best quality food, and do the legwork to ensure that it is food safe. We don’t list foods with unnecessary additives or preservatives, and we avoid any chemicals that we don’t know or can’t be explained to us. Certain things we are on the lookout for are: aflatoxin (nuts & dairy), pesticides (fruit & vegetables) and antibiotics (dairy & meat). We avoid products that contain palm oil (unless proven it is from sustainable sources). We also avoid products that contain (a lot) of sugar, such as sodas or salt (such as in processed meats).
Affordable
We are committed to offering you the best prices every day. We can do that because we have lower waste levels, less pilferage and no very expensive real estate in shopping malls. We do our deliveries electrically, so we use less fuel and we can consolidate orders so our cost to deliver is lower. The benefit we give goes to you: our customers. For some comparable products we are up to 30% cheaper than mainstream supermarkets. We work hard with our suppliers to ensure that we offer them fair prices, and that we also extend those to you. If you find lower prices for the same product: please give us a call and we will adjust immediately.
Friendly
Our team is the most friendly on the planet (we think so, anyway!). Our drivers will always go the extra mile to help with your delivery (up to your fridge if you want!), our customer service team is waiting with a big smile on their faces to assist, and all our tech is designed to offer you a user-friendly experience.
Sustainable
We are deeply committed to being a sustainable business. As Kenya’s 24th certified B Corp, we are recognised as a business that meets the highest standards of social and environmental impact. What do we do on a day to day? We use electric vehicles and electric bikes to deliver your goodies, wherever possible we do away with packaging. When not possible, we work closely with our suppliers to improve their packaging and make it more sustainable. As a business we monitor all our waste, and dispose of it responsibly. We support a nearby children’s home with food products that can be used to feed the many hungry mouths. And we seek out ways in which we can have further positive impact on people and the planet (we are always open to your suggestions on this!). We do not participate in the gig economy: all the people working for Greenspoon are on our payroll, our employees have permanent contracts, get all paid above Nairobi livable wages and have health insurance covers. To further cement our sustainability promise, we do not work with suppliers that are not complying with our ethical standards: using a lot of plastic, creating unsafe conditions for employees or are monopolistic by nature.
Kenyan
We always prioritize Kenyan producers, to build our nation. We are strong advocates for #BuyKenyaBuildKenya and we love to see a Kenyan brand succeed!! Sometimes we have to get products that have been created elsewhere (such as wines or some cheeses/meats), but we have faith that in time, the entrepreneurs in Kenya will bring something similar to the market that is 100% local. When we can not get it from Kenya, we first look at whether we can get it from other African countries. We also love to talk about “every shilling that you spend is a vote for the kind of world you want” and buying Kenyan really matters to us: we want Kenya to be a healthy and prosperous nation.
Fair
We offer fair prices and payment terms for all our suppliers. Typically, we work on 30 days payments which is almost unheard of in retail. Why? Because we know that building a business is really hard work, and unfair payment terms often lead to failure. We don’t want to be part of that cycle; we want to support and bring more entrepreneurs to a fair playing field. So when you shop with us, you support a different system with fair payment terms, which allows farmers to grow!
Honest
Tying in with Sustainability, we are honest about our products and always transparent about where they have come from. We are also honest in our culture: we own up when we make mistakes and do our best to correct them. We believe in honesty and transparency as one of the core pillars of our business.
