Ecoscapes

est. 2015

Ecoscapes Market Garden is a family-owned organic market garden on the western shore of Lake Naivasha where we grow over 100 different vegetables, fruits and herbs on approximately 20 acres. The farm was previously growing fine beans for export to the European market until we bought it in 2014. We started the organic conversion process in 2015 and we have been organically certified with the East Africa Organic Products Standard (EAOPS) since 2017.  We are passionate about the organic farming movement and the role it plays in protecting the environment and the health of our workers and our customers.

Alex Bell the co-founder of Ecoscapes has an undergraduate degree in horticulture from the University of Reading where she took the first courses being offered in organic farming in the mid 1980s. She then attained a masters degree in Landscape Architecture from The University of Georgia. After working as a landscape architect for 20 years she wanted to get back to her horticultural roots and together with her husband, Richard Bell, created Ecoscapes.

Richard is an ICT entrepreneur and a sustainable energy consultant with a BSC (Hons), St. Andrews University and a MSC (Sloan Fellowship), London Business School. He manages the finances, infrastructure, and business developments.

When we bought the farm, climate change was hitting the headlines and the effects of environmental destruction were being experienced globally. The impact of toxic chemicals used in conventionally grown vegetables was shown to have adverse effects on the health of the soil, the environment, the consumers, and the farm workers.

In Kenya there are about 1,345 products that are registered for use in crop production. From this list, 11 pesticides are classified as highly hazardous by the World Health Organization and 237 as moderately hazardous. For instance, some are classified as cancer-causing (24), prone to causing mutations in DNA (24), creating development disorders (35), disrupting the nervous system (140) and showing clear effects on reproduction (262).

Many of the more harmful pesticides have active ingredients, such as glyphosate, that are banned or heavily restricted in other places, such as Europe. There are estimates that at least 32% of the pesticide active ingredients that are currently registered and being sold in Kenya have been withdrawn from the European market, due to their serious potential impact on human and environmental health.

How your food is grown or raised can have a major impact on your mental and emotional health as well as the environment. People with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods.

Organically raised animals are NOT given routine antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal byproducts.

Organic meat and milk are richer in certain nutrients. Results of a 2016 European
study show that levels of certain nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, were up to 50 percent higher in organic meat and milk than in conventionally raised versions.

Organic food is GMO-free. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or genetically
engineered (GE) foods are plants whose DNA has been altered in ways that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

THE ORGANIC FARMING MOVEMENT

  • The green revolution of the 1950s arose with the purpose of increasing agricultural productivity and profitability through the intensive use of agro-chemicals.  This revolution has since led to the deterioration of our natural resources, the deterioration of the sustainability of the environment and the deterioration of the health of human beings and all other forms of life.
  •  Society has been increasingly aware of the risks on human health and the environment arising from excessive use of synthetic agro-chemicals and inadequate management of our natural resources.  Arising from this awareness there has been a movement towards alternative farming technologies such as organic agriculture, bio-dynamic agriculture, permaculture, biological farming, ecological agriculture, sustainable agriculture and regenerative agriculture.
  • Organic agriculture is the oldest production method on earth and it is now regaining importance throughout the world. It is a system that avoids the use synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. It is a farming approach that counteracts the harmful effects of the green revolution. It is a farming system that respects the biological relationships that exist in nature. It fosters environmental and natural resources conservation and results in the production of healthy food.
  • The aim of organic agriculture is to create integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable production systems. It fosters
  • the conservation of the environment and natural resources which contribute to the health of the producers and the consumers. The production system is ecologically sound, economically viable and socially acceptable.
  • Organic farming recognizes the direct connection between our health and how the food we eat is produced.  Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition has found significant differences between organic and non-organic farming. Organically produced fruit and vegetables contain 18-69% more antioxidants and lower levels of harmful pesticides and potentially toxic heavy metals.
