A traditional ploughman’s lunch would be eaten by farmers who didn’t have time for a full spread but were looking for something filling and fortifying for an afternoon’s farming. Generally served on a wooden platter, it consists of ham, cheese, pickles, a hunk of bread and some butter. Spruce it up with chutneys, hard-boiled eggs (or even scotch eggs) and some salad with cherry tomatoes, mixed lettuce and simple dressing as you please.
