WHY We Go Beyond
Celebrating the B Corp movement this year, 2023, is all about the idea that B Corps “Go Beyond”. This first week, we want to talk about WHY we go beyond.
Starting with your WHY is something that Simon Sinek is famous for, and it was definitely a factor for Juliet when she founded Greenspoon. Juliet’s why started with transparency because there was not enough connection between the food we eat, and where it comes from. That ties in with our why around quality, and safety. Because you can’t know about the safety and quality of your food if you have no idea where it comes from.
What’s our why?
Our why grew from that into being all about the belief that food can change the world – in the sense that climate change is impacted by our food systems. And on an individual level, our food choices.
We believe that by supporting and changing individual choices around food, through offering the kind of information and transparency we offer, food systems around the world will change. We will overcome the giant, faceless, companies that peddle food for profit alone, and will start to gain better connections with the farmers, makers and bakers that toil every day to create deliciousness.
Through this, we gain a better understanding of what it means to create with consciousness. Whether it’s through regenerative farming that helps our Mother Earth recover from the many years we have been on the take, or if it’s a social enterprise that builds up a community with reduced income opportunities; the way your food is produced really matters. And what is so heartening is that there are so many people doing the right thing. Our job is to seek those people out and bring them to our platform, which allows our customers to then make better, more impactful choices.
Changing the way we think about food
Our real why is to try and persuade you, our community, to change how you think about food. And to realise how much power you have in your hands to be the change. Because every shilling you spend is a vote for the kind of world you want in the future (and for the kind of personal health you want as well!). So whether you’re putting planet or people first, the two are indisputably connected, as are we to nature, and making the right choices around food will mean you are changing the world – spoon by spoon!
That said, as Simon Sinek says: “Passion alone can’t cut it. For passion to survive it needs structure. A why without how has little probability of success’. So next week we’ll talk about our how! Join us then…
