In a recent study conducted by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the World Animal Protection Center for Microbiology Research, there were concerning findings emerged regarding the safety of meat sold in supermarkets. The study carried out in March 2023, analyzed a total of 393 samples collected from regional supermarkets in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru. Of these samples, 206 were from raw poultry, and 187 were from pork. The results revealed that an alarming number of chicken and pork meat samples were contaminated with high levels of bacteria, including the presence of at least one type of bacterium. Furthermore, the study also discovered an increase in antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens, adding a new public health issue to the existing concerns in Kenya.

Out of the collected samples, the study found that a staggering 96.6% of chicken and 98.4% of pork samples were contaminated with high levels of bacteria. These findings highlight a significant problem within the Kenyan food chain, as the majority of shoppers rely on supermarkets for their meat purchases. It is concerning to think that consumers may unknowingly expose themselves to harmful bacteria when purchasing chicken or pork from these establishments.

The presence of high bacterial contamination in chicken and pork meat poses a severe risk of foodborne illnesses. The study identified the presence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, which further complicates the situation. These bacteria, including Salmonella, Campylobacter, and E. coli, can cause serious infections and lead to various health complications. This is particularly alarming considering the rising rates of antimicrobial resistance, which limit the effectiveness of traditional treatment options.

Dr. Victor Yamo, one of the scientists involved in the study, emphasized, “There is an urgent need for enhanced surveillance and control measures for bacterial pathogens in the Kenyan food chain. The study’s findings underscore the necessity of implementing robust monitoring systems at all stages of meat production, processing, and distribution. It is crucial to prioritize hygiene practices and ensure proper handling, storage, and transportation of meat to effectively mitigate bacterial contamination and curb the spread of antimicrobial resistance.”

As consumers, it is essential to stay informed and make informed choices when purchasing meat products. Considering the risks associated with contaminated meat, it is advisable to source meat from reputable suppliers who prioritize hygiene and quality control. Exploring alternative options such as local butchers and certified organic farms can provide consumers with more assurance regarding the safety of the meat they consume.

The recent study’s findings regarding the high bacterial contamination and presence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens in chicken and pork sold in Kenyan supermarkets demand immediate action. The implementation of enhanced surveillance and control measures within the food chain is crucial to safeguard consumer health and well-being.

By raising awareness, making informed choices, and demanding stricter regulations, we can contribute to mitigating the risks associated with contaminated meat and combating antimicrobial resistance. Together, we can work towards a safer and healthier food system for all.
