I was one of those lucky teens who never experienced acne. So when my fellow peers were busy looking for skin care options and opinions I was never bothered. I didn’t know adult acne was a thing, and more so came with lifestyle change. Moving to the city alone meant I dictated what I consumed on a daily basis, had to commute to work on a daily basis, I also chose to consume fast food options as I was always on the go and needless to say adult acne became my new reality! I really didn’t understand that my sedentary lifestyle, food I chose to consume and limited exposure to sunlight was an issue.

Fast forward; It is important to take care of our skin. And the secret to glowing skin, is in our lifestyle; the food we are consuming and how active we are on a day to day basis.

Your Skin Type

Before we delve into how our lifestyle affects our skin, its good to understand that we are all unique, with different skin types, that experiences different problems tied to your skin health.

NORMAL SKIN

This skin is neither too dry nor too oily. It has regular texture, no imperfections and a clean, soft appearance, and does not need special care.

SENSITIVE SKIN

Sensitive skin is more prone to react to stimuli to which normal skin has no reaction. It is a fragile skin, usually accompanied by feelings of discomfort, such as heat, tightness, redness or itching.

DRY SKIN

Dry skin is often caused by external factors such as the weather, low air humidity and immersion in hot water, and it is usually temporary.

YOUR LIFESTYLE AND SKIN CARE

Irrespective of your skin type, we need to realize that; Your lifestyle choices can directly affect the appearance of your skin. A lack of sleep is immediately visible on your face. Excessive alcohol use and smoking leads to vascular skin-surface changes. High stress levels may cause itching, hives and loss of skin color. A poor diet can result in a dry, lack luster skin. Excessive washing with harsh soap can damage your skin.

HOW TO HEAL YOUR SKIN

  1. Stop smoking. There’s no doubt: smoking leads to premature ageing and wrinkles, and can give the skin an unhealthy yellow pallor.
  2. Stay out of the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes wrinkles, loss of elasticity, sunspots and premature ageing. In some people, these changes start to appear in their early 20s.
  3. Get your beauty sleep. Your skin needs sleep for cellular renewal, and not getting at least 8 hours results in a breakdown of collagen. This will highlight any minor skin imperfections, making you look older than you should.
  4. Exercise more. Grab your gym gear and get moving if you want to improve the health of your skin. Sweating helps to flush impurities and clears pores. Cardiovascular exercise also improves circulation, which encourages the transport of oxygen and nutrients to the skin
  5. You are what you eat. Poor diet is almost always bad news for your skin and can result in dehydration, dryness, premature ageing, puffiness and clogged pores. In some people, it may even contribute to acne.
  6. Don’t touch your face. It can lead to scarring, an increase in wrinkles, and even the flu or other viruses.
  7. Hydrate inside and out. Drink around eight glasses of water a day.
  8. Wear sunscreen 365 days a year, rain or shine, indoors or out. We need to protect our skin even when we’re driving a car, flying in an airplane, or running errands.

EASY FIXES TO SKIN ISSUES

Lack of sleep try Vitamin C

If you’re not finding it hard to get some shut-eye, or even get a full night’s sleep, you’ll wake up looking less than your best. Puffy eyes, grey skin and breakouts are all examples of what can occur if you don’t get enough beauty sleep. Vitamin C is perfect for those days when you’ve simply not had enough rest.

Are You a Daily Commuter try Charcoal

If you’re a daily commuter, your skin will be exposed to environmental aggressors and significant pollution levels; all of which need to be combatted if you want to keep it healthy. Charcoal products will help you combat these effects.

Are you Under Stress Try Hyaluronic Acid

Generally, if you’re stressed, you should be reaching for anything with Lavender and Chamomile in it as these help to reduce tension and mental fatigue. They’re great in your pillow sprays and temple balms, but for your skin, you need something infinitely more powerful: Hyaluronic Acid.
