Green Choices for a Greener World

We are squarely into the last day of the Green month here at Greenspoon. You might be thinking, oh, that’s great for fishermen and those who live along the coastline, or the farmers back in the village, let them celebrate it but sustainable living.

One day soon you will go to your favorite food joint and find it closed down. Not to scare you but that is the reality that is staring at us if we don’t change and soon.

The worst drought in decades is gripping eastern Africa. Parching landscapes, killing livestock and creating a humanitarian crisis. Driven by climate change, it’s also leading to civil strife, as shepherding communities battle each other for scarce resources.

Climate change is disrupting weather patterns, leading to extreme weather events, unpredictable water availability, aggravate water scarcity and contaminating water supplies. Such impacts can drastically affect the quantity and quality of water that humans and animals need to survive.

It’s Greenspoon’s hope that by the end of this thematic month, we can all make simple swaps in order to do our bit for the planet. By swapping out products we use every day for a more sustainable alternative we can make a greater impact.

Greenspoon going electric as a means of delivering the honestly delicious products we have for you is one proof of an ongoing commitment to operate in an environmentally-friendly and sustainable way.

We are continuously finding ways to improve through regular environmental reviews which means we have been able to make long-standing changes that leave a positive impact on the environment, the local community and our staff. The Ngong Forest Green Run being the latest of these endeavors. Together with our Customer Partners, Suppliers, Consumers, we do our bit to be greener.

As the curtains fall on the Greenspoon Green Month we want to encourage you to get involved and apply some of the ideas below to make your space, whether in the office or at home.

Recycling

Think before you print. A lot of the information we need these days can be written and saved digitally, so consider carefully if you need to have printed copies of documents.

If hard copies are indeed required, then consider printing them on recycled paper. If possible, choose the ‘eco print’ setting on your printer  you can find this on ‘Printing Properties’ so you can print double-sided, skip blank pages, and save on toner, ink and paper.

Make sure to recycle as much as you can from the start. There are lots of people sourcing for waste paper to recycle and make things like tissue paper, make use of them.

Lighting

Lighting is key, this best be your number one consideration when you are sourcing for a space to rent.

Visualise your current space, and then think about how you can best optimise the lay-out to allow you to save on energy. Try to find a space or location that catches as much sunlight as possible, so you can reduce the use of artificial lights during the day.

If you’re working in an office, you can suggest to your employer the idea of installing light sensors (this is true for most of the apartments basements and hall ways that Greenspoon deliver to) so the lights only turn on when people are in and around the workspace.

Travel smart

Have you ever considered other modes of travel like cycling, taking the public transport or walking to your destination? This goes hand in hand in hand with calculating your carbon footprint

You often hear people talk about the importance of lowering your carbon footprint, but what does that mean, and how do you actually do it? Carbon footprint refers to the amount of CO2 emissions that is linked to all the activities that you do day-to-day.

A lot of companies are now putting sustainability higher in the corporate agenda, as people understand the benefits that this can have on the environment as well as on how the business operates.
