“Why do you Run?” We non-runners can’t help but blubber out this question to our friends and family that run. I don’t know about you but it beats me why they take the time and energy to go out and run.

I can place a wager, the average non-runner just cannot seem to grasp why you do it, and normally we ask in a way that really means, “Why are you so crazy and possessed that you would want to voluntarily put your body through that torturous exercise of running, and then repeat the process multiple times in the span of a week/month/year/years?”

Kipchoge I understand, you? Smh.

On learning of the upcoming The Green Run 2022 Ngong Road Forest I decided to have a tête-à-tête with a friend who is always running when he is not working. If he could work as he ran, this one could. His wife and I aren’t the best support system, we don’t get it or him.

“I don’t have a weight problem”, he starts. “I run for many other reasons but weight or health reasons. I run to be an example to my kids of an active lifestyle (the second born daughter looks to have caught on. She’s always running) Running also helps me relax. It’s how I get away from my work life. It’s a good stress reliever. Nature is a very good stress reliever. I enjoy nature so running helps me discover many serene places in my neighborhood. Some that you just drive by and do not notice with your windows rolled up.

I also run for causes. It’s very fulfilling to run for something that doesn’t benefit you directly but it does in the long run—It benefits another person, a charity, a non-profit organization, or a community. It increases the value you experience when you run and it helps motivate you on those difficult days. I highly recommend running for a cause as it provides each runner an extra reason, an extra incentive, an extra purpose for running.

Running for a charity can be one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. You have the chance to support others who are less fortunate than you by doing what you love – running! Furthermore, if your fundraising campaign goes viral or draws the attention of media or a large group of people, your impact will be immeasurable. I’m not one to go for a buzz but it’s true if it happens.

Running for a cause not only gives you extra motivation to cross the finish line, but it is also a fun way to invest in your health and well-being. It could be an amazing experience to join thousands of runners, taking the tarmac or beautiful trails, breaking out of your routine, getting more active, fitter and healthier.

Not only will your body lose a few pounds, but the training process will boost your immune system, relieve stress, and feed you with an extra dose of the body’s natural painkillers—endorphins. Besides the sense of achievement and satisfaction, there is a purpose for completing the race.

Running for charity is a great way to be part of something truly worthwhile. Whether it is a 5K, 10K, a marathon, or even an ultramarathon – it will give you the inspiration to participate in the race as well as the chance to raise funds for your chosen non-profit organization.”

In this case, you don’t have to find your next event and become a charity runner, enroll for the Greenspoon sponsored Green Run 2022 at Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary this Sunday 20th March 2022
