Mtofu was founded by Marcus after his daughter announced in 2019 that she was going to be vegan. They were soon to discover that being vegan in Kenya at that time was a real challenge. They started making tofu together with Mtofu’s co-founder and great friend of Marcus. And as they talked to more people about their journey, they realised that there was a demand for plant-based products in Kenya.
As Marcus says in the video below, more and more Kenyans are driven by the desire to be more healthy, but also to fight climate change with each meal they have. Plant-based food is proven to have a positive effect on the climate, so it’s a great choice to make! At Mtofu the raw ingredients for the tofu is sourced locally in Kenya, and Mtofu work closely with the farmers they purchase from to ensure top quality products.
In addition to the start up Mtofu, Marcus has also opened the plant-based café Ethos, where you can go and enjoy plant-based meals and drinks. When we visited, it was hard to tell whether what we were eating was meat or tofu!! So we encourage you to give it a go!
Alongside all this work, Mtofu also runs their charity, called Vegan for Climate. With this project, they visit schools and teach children about plant-based nutrition, educating them about the impact their food choices make to their health as well as the planet. On these visits, every child gets to taste a smokey tofu sausage from Mtofu, and to genuinely taste how good they are!
