Salmon Shortage: What You Need to Know and What to Try Instead

We’re running low on salmon! Don’t panic, though, we’ve got a plan in place to make sure we’re still bringing you the freshest and most delicious seafood out there.

Our suppliers, Smokey Oakeys and Sea Meatery have been having a bit of trouble sourcing salmon from Norway. The rising cost of shipping due to the current dollar vs shilling rate has made it difficult to get the salmon to us without incurring a huge cost. To make matters worse, insurance companies have deemed Kenya a ‘high-risk country’, making it difficult to insure the value loss of consignments.

But fear not! Our suppliers are working hard to find alternative farms to source from, ones that can guarantee a constant supply of salmon. We’re confident that we’ll have a solution soon. We know this might be disappointing news for some of you, but we’re doing everything we can to ensure we’re still providing you with the best seafood around.

In the meantime, if you don’t see salmon on our website, we’ve got some amazing alternatives that you should definitely give a try. We promise they’re just as delicious! From succulent tuna to meaty tilapia, we’ve got a variety of options to choose from. Who knows, you might even discover a new favorite seafood dish.

  • Trout: If you’re looking for a fish that’s similar to salmon in taste and texture, trout is a great choice. Like salmon, it’s a fatty fish that’s rich in omega-3s, which can help reduce inflammation and promote heart health. Trout is also a good source of protein and vitamin D. We stock trout from Smokey Oakeys, check out the different varieties we have here.
  • Herring is another great alternative to salmon that can be substituted for sardines. Herring is a fatty fish that’s rich in omega-3s, making it a great choice for heart health and reducing inflammation. Herring also contains vitamin D, vitamin B12, and selenium, all of which are important nutrients for overall health. In terms of taste, herring has a similar flavor profile to sardines, with a slightly stronger taste and oilier texture. Herring is often pickled or smoked, which can add extra flavor and complexity to the fish. We stock locally sourced herring from Sea Meatery, check it out here.
  • Tuna: Tuna is a leaner fish than salmon, but it’s still a good source of protein and omega-3s. It’s also a versatile fish that can be grilled, baked, or eaten raw in sushi or sashimi.  Whether you are looking for tuna steaks or fillet, we stock them from Kentuna.
  • Tilapia: If you’re looking for a mild-tasting fish that’s easy to find and affordable, tilapia is a good choice. While it’s not as high in omega-3s as some other fish, it’s still a good source of protein and low in calories. Tilapia can be baked, grilled, or sautéed. Check out the amazing sale we have on Victory Farms tilapia fillets, you are going to love it! We also have organic whole tilapia, and breaded fish fingers made from tilapia by Nautic Delights.
  • Cod: Cod is a white fish that’s low in fat and calories but high in protein. It’s also a good source of vitamin B12 and selenium. Cod has a mild flavor and firm texture that makes it a versatile fish for cooking. It can be baked, fried, or grilled.  You can also pair it with vegetables and a bowl of hot soup, it’s an ideal healthy meal to help take the chill off on a cold chilly day! We stock cod fillets from Kentuna, find them here
